New Belgium Lips of Faith Dunkel Weiss Review

Lips of Faith Dunkel Weiss

Dunkelweiss [Type 27] 9.0% ABV

Poured a delicious looking dark copper color with a massive brown head. A sour nose, but very little sourness on the tongue. Malty and mouthcoating, with a bit of hops, more than the typical dunkelweiss. Maybe a bit peppery on the finish.

A fun beer, well worth the $7 I paid for it. Some unusual features for the style, but they work well together. Less of the banana and clove come through, but it is still present to let you know its roots.

Shiner Holiday Cheer Beer Review

Dunkelweizen [Type 27] 5.4% ABV

I had a bottle of Shiner Holiday Cheer at Goode & Co. in Houston, TX along with some great BBQ brisket! This is a dunkelweizen made with peaches and pecans. No hop flavor at all.

Rating

An extremely sweet fruity beer, Holiday Cheer is not for everyone. I think it went well with the BBQ brisket, it was really much like the pecan pie I also enjoyed with dinner. It is more like dessert. Very smooth, with an aftertaste of peaches. I was pretty good after one, not the kind of thing to drink several bottles

Iron Hill Brewery Dunkel Weizen

Iron Hill Dunkel Weizen

Dunkel Weizen [Type 27] 6.3% ABV

Iron Hill Brewery is a small brewpub chain in and around Newark Delaware. I was a little surprised at how small their brewing equipment was, but if you just brew beer for one restaurant at one location, I suppose you don't need that much capacity. Each location has different beers available. The restaurant had some nice wood paneling, and a varied menu. I had an excellent hummus wrap that was far bigger than I could eat.

The dunkel weizen came out as I would expect, in a pilsner glass, dark and murky. It was a little heavier and maltier than your standard hefeweizen, with pronounced fruitiness. Low hops.

Rating

This is a good, solid dark wheat beer. I would come back here gladly. I sampled several other beers, including a golden ale, a standard hefeweizen, and a smoked porter. All were good. Iron Hill does a good job. I didn't try anything crazy, but they nailed the standard kinds of beer. That is a very good thing.

Samuel Adams Winter Lager
Dark Wheat Lager 5.2% ABV

A dark beer for a dark time, with extra malted wheat for body. This beer has ground cinnamon, orange peel, and ginger added to warm you. It has a large, creamy head that quickly dissipates. Definitely not as dark as a dark German beer, I found this to be a bit lighter while still having a satisfying heaviness in the mouth. It is about 52ºF (11ºC) outside at present, perhaps a touch warm yet, but in the right range for this beer.

A fine beer. I could enjoy it regularly, it has a down home feel to it.
